My Humanities Story

Part 1: A Collection of Books

During my time in the Humanities 310 class, I read more books than I expected. I am grateful that the class got the opportunity to read more, even if most of the things we read were plays. It felt good to physically have a copy of the book, rather than reading it from a screen like I have started to get used to. I even recently started getting back into reading on my own time. When I was younger, I used to read tons of books but sadly as I aged, the amount of books I read declined and because of online school, most books required for class were read online. So, I am happy that I am getting back into reading with the help of my humanities class. Below are some books that I have read.

CliffsComplete. Shakespeare's Hamlet. Cliffs Notes Inc., 2000

  • The CliffsComplete edition of Shakespeare's famous play, Hamlet, provides the original text along with helpful notes and summaries to better understand the material.
  • Cunningham, Lawrence, et al. Culture and Values: A Survey of the Humanities, Cengage Learning, 2017.

    • This is a textbook I read in Humanities 310, to help understand humanities, art, and history better. It helped to understand different topics that were being taught.

Finn, A. J. The Woman in the Window. HarperCollins, 2021.

    • The Woman in the Window
      A.J. Finn
This fictional novel is filled with thriller and mystery as it follows along the life of the main character, Anna Fox while she battles through mental illness. There are many unpredictable twists and turns while secrets and truths unravel throughout the story.

Jewell, Lisa. Then She Was Gone. Simon & Schuster, 2017.
    • Then She Was Gone is another novel filled with thriller, mystery, and suspense. It is about a woman named Laurel Mack, who is trying to put her life back together after her daughter, Ellie, disappears. Laurel then sees a girl who looks exactly like her daughter and she attempts to find the truth.

Machiavelli Niccolò. The Prince. Norton, 2019.

    • The Prince is a classic novel that emphasizes and eduacates on the political states of 16th century Italy.

Paris, Ricardo, Rymond, & Johnson. Child Growth and Development . College of the Canyons , 2020.
    • This is textbook that I read in Child Development 312. It was an interesting textbook that helped me understand different children's mental, emotional, and physical growth from birth to adolescence.

Pierre Augustin de Beaumarchais. The Marriage of Figaro. Ivan R. Dee, Inc. Publisher , 1994.

    • This is a new translation of Mozart's comical play, The Marriage of Figaro.

Ryan, Jeanne. Nerve. Dial Press, 2012.

    Nerve
    Jeanne Ryan

    • Nerve is a science fiction novel filled with action, adventure, and drama. It takes place in a world where there an online game called "Nerve" occurs. You can either be a player or watcher, where players earn money through dangerous dares, and watchers pay money to watch the players risk their lives.
    Part 2: My Story

In the beginning of the Humanities class, my goal was the expand my limited knowledge on humanities, which  I definitely accomplished. I joined the class with the expectation of learning more on human society, philosophy, and history. While I learned more on those topics, I also learned more topics that I would not have imagined would be crucial in humanities. An example being different styles of arts including music and literature. I learned that humanities is more broad with various themes and aspects to it.
What interested me the most in the class, was learning about the history of different countries and cultures while being able to tie them all to humanities through themes. It allowed me to see arts, science, and history in a different light. It was also interesting how we were taught the material. We learned through lectures, videos, and texts, but also through other classmates as well. The were assignments where we had to post blogs and discussion posts. We had to also read other classmates posts and respond with helpful feedback. Being able to read what others have to say was another way to learn since we could see how other people see the topic or they might emphasize things that others did not pay attention too.
Here is a 10 minute video about the importance of humanities :).
